Advent 2011, Day 7

Today marks the last day for the first week of Advent.  I'm so glad that our family had finished the first week with the same excitement that we had when we decided to follow the Advent tradition this year.  Praise God that our family never missed any day; no matter how busy we are, we always find time to pray the Advent prayer, read scriptures and gospels, read bible stories and create crafts that are related to the story of the day.  Our Jesse tree is already beginning to look good :)

Today, the kids have drawn a ladder - a symbol taken from Jacob's dream mentioned in Genesis 28:12-15.  In the scripture, God repeated his promise to Jacob, same promise which was also spoken to his grandfather Abraham.

And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou list, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.

Jacob was cunning, selfish and liar in his past life. But why was he chosen by God to carry on the covenant? Jacob was chosen by God, not because he is good, but because he yielded to God.

Not by works of righteousness which we have done,
but according to his mercy he saved us
(Titus 3:5)

First week of advent reminds us of the 'promise' of God.  It gives us time to prepare; to reflect; to be hopeful.  It allows us to let go of our sins and accept God. Let us all be inspired by Jacob's story.
